Huizhou stone carving, or "徽州石雕" in Chinese, is widely used in the ancient residential architecture of Huizhou. Since the Ming and Qing dynasties, the commonly used stone materials include "chayuan stone" and "Yixian green stone". These stones have a tight texture, moderate hardness, delicate grain, excellent luster, and an elegant and rustic color, making them ideal materials for carving.
In Huizhou-style architecture, stone carvings are primarily used to decorate components such as gate towers, gate walls, and archways. The patterns in stone carvings mainly feature plant and animal motifs, as well as motifs with historical and cultural significance. The decorative patterns in stone carvings emphasize the aesthetic appeal of lines and highlight the form and dynamic characteristics of the patterns.
