5-Day Huangshan Study Tour: Huizhou Culture, Villages, Crafts & Tea

Day 1 | Huizhou Museum → Huizhou Cuisine Culture → Qiyun Mountain (Daoist Heritage & Danxia Landforms) → Overnight in Tunxi (Huangshan City)

Morning: Huizhou History & Culture Museum
Visit the Huizhou History & Culture Museum. With Huizhou culture as the core theme, the museum integrates traditional Huizhou-style architecture and garden design, helping students gain a structured understanding of Huizhou history, local customs, and the region’s natural environment.

Late Morning: Huizhou Cuisine Museum
Continue to the Huizhou Cuisine Museum to learn the origins and development of Huizhou cuisine within the context of Huizhou merchants’ culture. Students will also explore common Huizhou cooking methods such as braising, stewing, simmering, and steaming, and get to know signature dishes including Stinky Mandarin Fish, Hairy Tofu, Wenzheng Bamboo Shoots, and Hu Shi “One-Pot” Stew.

Afternoon: Qiyun Mountain (Danxia Landscapes & Taoist Heritage)
Travel to Qiyun Mountain, known for its striking Danxia red-rock scenery and deep Taoist cultural heritage. See ancient cliff inscriptions (moya stone carvings), explore historic Taoist sites, and enjoy panoramic mountain views while learning about local Taoist traditions.

Overnight: Tunxi (Huangshan City)
Check in at Huashan Huiyan Hotel, Huangshan City (or a similar 4-star hotel).


Day 2 | Huangshan Field Study Day: Geopark Museum → Yungu Cable Car → Classic Highlights Route → Evening Walk in Tunxi Old Street / Xin’an River

Morning: Transfer to Mt. Huangshan Scenic Area
Drive to Mt. Huangshan (Yellow Mountain). Upon arrival at the Yungu (Cloud Valley) Transfer Center, start with a visit to the Huangshan Geopark Museum to learn about Huangshan’s geology and landforms, local plants and wildlife, and exhibits related to culture and art inspired by the mountain.

Midday–Afternoon: Yungu Cable Car Up & Educational Hike on the Highlights Route
Take the Yungu Cable Car up the mountain and begin a guided, study-focused walk covering Huangshan’s classic viewpoints, including Shixin Peak, Black Tiger Pine, Dream Brush Peaks, and Monkey Watching the Sea.
Plenty of time will be reserved on the mountain for photos, observation, and learning tasks/check-ins (e.g., geology notes, landscape observation, and guided discussion).

Evening: Return to Tunxi – City Culture Observation
Return to Tunxi District. In the evening, you may enjoy a light city exploration such as a night walk on Tunxi Old Street, the Xin’an River waterfront, and the Old Bridge area for local culture observation and storytelling.

Overnight: Tunxi (Huangshan City)
Stay at Huashan Huiyan Hotel, Huangshan City (or a similar 4-star hotel).


Day 3 | UNESCO World Heritage Hongcun Village: Huizhou Architecture & Water System → Huizhou Pastry-Making Workshop (Hands-on Practice)

Morning: Hongcun Ancient Village (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Travel to Hongcun Ancient Village, one of China’s most iconic Huizhou-style villages. Students will observe the layout of Huizhou architecture, the village’s unique water system, and cultural spaces related to traditional education and clan heritage.
Key sites include South Lake, South Lake Academy, Moon Pond, historic ancestral halls, and classic Huizhou carvings (brick, wood, and stone details).

Afternoon: Huizhou Pastry-Making Workshop in Yixian County
Visit a local Huizhou pastry workshop/factory in Yixian County. Learn about the ingredients and production process, then take part in a hands-on pastry-making session. Students can make their own pastries and taste what they create as part of practical learning.

Overnight: Tunxi (Huangshan City)
Stay at Huashan Huiyan Hotel, Huangshan City (or a similar 4-star hotel).


Day 4 | Huizhou Ancient City (Shexian): Memorial Archways & Government Office → Ink-Making & Gold Detailing Workshop → Yuliang Dam (Ancient Water Conservancy Project) → Overnight in Tunxi / Shexian

Morning: Huizhou Ancient City (Shexian County)
Drive to Huizhou Ancient City (Shexian). Visit key landmarks such as the Huizhou Prefecture Government Office (Huizhou Fuyamen), the famous Xu Guo Stone Archway (an eight-sided memorial arch), and Doushan Street. Through on-site observation, students will better understand Huizhou’s traditional city layout, social order, and etiquette-based cultural systems reflected in architecture and urban planning.

Late Morning: Hu Kaiwen Ink Workshop – Hands-on Heritage Craft
Visit the Hu Kaiwen Ink-making workshop, a well-known Huizhou ink brand. Under the guidance of an instructor, students will experience traditional techniques such as gold detailing on Huizhou ink (ink-stick decoration) and/or ink-making processes, and complete their own study project to take home.

Afternoon: Yuliang Dam (Ancient Water Conservancy Engineering)
Continue to Yuliang Dam in Shexian. Originally built in the Tang Dynasty and rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty, it has a history of about 1,400 years and is one of China’s famous ancient water conservancy projects—also the largest historic hydraulic engineering site in Shexian.
Students can conduct field observation around themes such as “water engineering and the development of ancient towns” and “how humans use and protect natural resources.”

Overnight: Tunxi (Huangshan City)
Stay at Huashan Huiyan Hotel, Huangshan City (or a similar 4-star hotel).

Day 5 | Xieyuda Tea Culture Museum: Famous Huangshan Teas → Xixinan Nature Experience → Transfer to Train Station / Airport

Morning: Xieyuda Tea Culture Museum
Visit the Xieyuda Tea Culture Museum to learn about Chinese tea culture and Huangshan’s most famous teas, such as Huangshan Maofeng, Taiping Houkui, and Keemun Black Tea (Qimen Hongcha). Students will understand the basic tea journey from picking → processing → tasting, and learn how tea culture connects to local history and daily life.

Late Morning–Afternoon: Xixinan Scenic Area (Nature Observation & Stream Experience)
Continue to Xixinan Scenic Area, known for its old trees, clear streams, and peaceful natural setting—ideal for nature observation and a light water/stream experience (activities will be organized with safety as the top priority).

Departure: Transfer Service
After the visit, transfer to Huangshan North Railway Station / Tunxi Airport (or your hotel drop-off in Huangshan City, if needed).
